Real-Time Analytics: The Key to True Per-Order Profitability

13 October 2026

"Profitable" and "true profit" aren't the same thing. Most sellers calculate margin from the selling price and the cost of goods, and stop there. Once you add the marketplace's referral fee, the ad spend that actually drove the sale, the shipping cost, and the share of that product's returns, the real number is often meaningfully lower, sometimes negative.

Why margin looks better on paper than it is

Cost of goods is the easy part to track. Everything after it, the fee tier that applies to that specific category, the ad campaign that was actually running when the order came in, the outbound shipping cost for that size and weight, the portion of returns attributable to that SKU, is scattered across different systems and rarely gets pulled together per order.

Our /profitability dashboard calculates true profit at the order level, combining cost of goods with the fees, ad spend, shipping and refunds that applied to that specific sale, then rolls it up by SKU, channel and time period.

What per-order accuracy changes

  • A product with a healthy-looking margin on paper can be correctly identified as a loss-maker
  • Pricing decisions account for the actual fees and ad cost per sale, not a rough average
  • Restocking decisions favour what's genuinely profitable, not just what sells the most units
  • Discounts and promotions can be sized against real margin instead of guessed at

Real per-order profit is the only number that tells you whether a sale was actually worth making. You can /book-a-demo to see it calculated against your own catalogue.
