Walmart Marketplace Integration: What to Check

Written by the WhatSales teamReviewed by Rashad Hussain, Founder

A Walmart Marketplace integration connects your Walmart seller account to another tool so listings, orders and costs move across automatically. The question that matters is the same as on any marketplace: once the data is flowing, does it show what each order actually earned? This guide explains how Walmart's integrations work, what Walmart says it takes to sell there, and what to check in the data that comes back.

What is Walmart Marketplace and how does it work?

Walmart Marketplace lets approved third-party sellers list products on Walmart.com alongside Walmart's own range. Walmart's seller page says there are no setup, monthly or hidden fees for sellers. Instead you pay a referral fee on each completed sale, ranging from 6% to 15% depending on category and total sale price. That is the US marketplace, and Walmart's terms can change, so check its current seller pages.

What do you need to sell on Walmart Marketplace?

Walmart lists these minimum qualifications on its seller page:

  • A business tax ID (a personal social security number is not accepted) or a business licence number
  • Documents that verify your business name and address
  • A history of marketplace or ecommerce success
  • Products with GTIN or UPC numbers from a GS1 company prefix
  • A catalogue that complies with Walmart's prohibited products policy
  • Fulfilment through Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS) or another US business-to-consumer warehouse with returns capability
  • An account with a compatible payment processor

The page does not spell out eligibility for businesses outside the US beyond the US warehouse requirement, so if you sell from the UK or elsewhere, check Walmart's current rules before you plan around it.

Is there an API for Walmart?

Yes. Walmart's developer portal describes its Marketplace APIs as giving programmatic access to the marketplace for sellers and approved solution providers. Walmart's own seller guides say the APIs let sellers manage product listings, inventory, orders and more. Tools use these APIs to read your data, and you approve access yourself from your Walmart account.

What is a marketplace integration?

It is the connection between your selling account and another system, such as stock, order management or profit software. A good one brings in the full picture of each order, not only the sale price.

How a profit tool connects to Walmart

With WhatSales, you generate a key from your Walmart account and paste it in. In outline:

  • In WhatSales, open Connect Platform and choose Walmart, which asks for a Client ID and a Secret Key
  • In a new tab, log in to your Walmart account and open the key generator in the Walmart developer portal
  • Choose to add a new key for a Solution Provider and select WhatSales from the list
  • Copy the Client ID and Secret Key into WhatSales

The full steps are in the connection guide at /help-center/getting-started/walmart.

What to check once it is connected

  • Referral fees taken from each order at the actual rate, not a flat estimate
  • WFS or other fulfilment costs matched to the right orders
  • Returns and refunds charged back to the correct product
  • Advertising spend tied to the sales it produced, so you can see profit rather than only sales
  • Currency conversion if you report in pounds but sell in US dollars
  • Product costs loaded, so margin is real and not estimated

Is Walmart Marketplace worth it?

It depends on your products, your costs and how well you fulfil in the US. The fees are simple to describe, but they are only one line. The reliable answer is your own profit per SKU on real orders, compared with the same products on your other channels.

WhatSales connects to Walmart and rebuilds each order into one profit figure after fees, fulfilment, returns and product cost. See /integrations/walmart for the integration, and /insights/walmart-seller-analytics-what-to-track for what to track once you are connected.
