Why OnBuy margins are hard to track

One of the UK’s fastest-growing marketplaces, with costs that add up quietly.

OnBuy gives UK sellers a growing alternative to the big marketplaces, with commission rates that vary by category. But between commission, shipping, ad spend and refunds, it’s easy to lose track of what a listing actually earned. A sales total on its own doesn’t tell you what stayed.

Every OnBuy order is reconstructed from its components: the price the buyer actually paid, so the starting number is the real one, not an estimate. WhatSales then deducts the costs that decide whether an order made money:

  • ✓OnBuy commission pulled from the order at its actual category rate, not a flat percentage.
  • ✓Shipping & fulfilment, including labels you buy yourself or a 3PL’s fees.
  • ✓Ad spend behind the specific sale, not a blended average.
  • ✓Refunds and returns, allocated back to the SKU that was returned.
  • ✓Product cost (COGS), plus product-level economics for every SKU.

The result is an estimated profit and margin you can trust: the figure that reaches your bank, ready to sort, filter and trend across your whole catalogue.

True profit on every OnBuy order, not a sales total. Commission, shipping, ad spend and refunds all chip away at the same sale. WhatSales rebuilds each order from its raw parts, then applies the actual costs, to give you profit and margin per order and per SKU.

Sort by margin, filter by product, trend across the quarter: OnBuy sits in one dashboard with Amazon, eBay and every other channel you connect, rather than in an order export you have to decode by hand.

Same £24.99 sale, three quiet deductions

Commission, shipping and ad spend all take a bite before you see a penny.

On a typical £24.99 order, commission, shipping and the ad spend behind the sale take around 30% before cost of goods is even counted. WhatSales breaks that down on every single order, not just as a one-off example.

Three deductions, one sale: £7.65 gone before cost of goods is even counted. Commission varies by category, so WhatSales tracks the real amount on every order and nothing gets averaged away.

Everything you need

Everything you need to run OnBuy, in one place.

Performance

A listing can be getting plenty of traffic on OnBuy and still underperform once commission and shipping are counted. Performance tracks sales trends, orders and refund rates on OnBuy alongside every other channel, so you can tell what’s actually driving growth.

Restock

A stockout on a strong OnBuy listing doesn’t just lose the sale. It can push buyers to a competing offer while you wait for stock to land. Restock flags low inventory automatically, before you run dry.

Replan

Not every product deserves a second order, especially once commission and shipping are accounted for. Replan shows you which products are actually worth reordering, based on real sales and margin performance, not just what’s moving.

Sourcing

You know a product is selling on OnBuy. What you don’t always know is whether your supplier can restock it in time to protect your listing. Sourcing tracks supplier lead times alongside your sales pace, so restocking decisions reflect real turnaround.

Engage

OnBuy seller performance depends on fast replies and low unresolved-issue rates. Engage keeps every buyer message and support ticket in one inbox, so nothing slips through and your standing stays protected.

Workspace

Scaling on OnBuy brings its own listing, content and compliance demands. Workspace takes on the listing copy, product imagery, variation and bundle setup, quality assurance and day-to-day support, so growth doesn’t cost you your week.

Questions

OnBuy sellers ask

We’re always around to help, reach out via email or phone and we’ll be happy to assist.

How does WhatSales calculate real profit on an OnBuy order?+
Each order is rebuilt from its raw components: sale price, OnBuy commission, shipping or fulfilment cost, the ad spend behind the sale, refunds and your product cost (COGS). WhatSales subtracts every one of those to show true net profit per order and per SKU.
Does WhatSales account for OnBuy’s category commission rates?+
Yes. Commission is pulled from each order at the rate actually charged for that category, so a product in a higher-commission category shows its real margin rather than an average.
How are OnBuy refunds and returns handled?+
Refunds are tracked against the original order with a refund ratio and reasons surfaced, so a specific SKU quietly losing money to returns shows up before it eats into a month’s margin.
Can I compare OnBuy against my other marketplaces?+
Yes. OnBuy sits alongside Amazon, eBay, Shopify and every other connected channel in one dashboard, so you can see whether a product performs better on OnBuy or somewhere else.
